DNA bar-coding has shown that Mathew's Wainscot is a coastal form/race of Common Wainscot (Mythimna pallens) occurring in saltmarsh habitats from southern Suffolk to East Kent and from West Sussex to western Hampshire.

We will keep Mathew's Wainscot listed as a separate species here for reference only.
