Epichoristodes acerbella
African Carnation Tortrix

(Walker, 1864)997 / 49.0381

Norfolk status
Adventive.

An adventive species, which has been accidentally imported and intercepted in the UK in the past (Heathrow airport in 1960) as larvae in Carnations(Dianthus) and other plants from Africa. Other UK records include larvae in cut flowers purchased from supermarkets and apples from South Africa.

Adult moths, probably imported on cut flowers, have been trapped on a couple of occasions in the UK only.

This species originates from South Africa and has been introduced into several (southern) European countries. It is unlikely that it will become established in Central Europe outside of greenhouses.

New for Norfolk in 2024, adult moth to MV at Intwood (A. Palmer, 04/09/24) Possibly the 3rd wild-caught British specimen.

Verification Grade Comment: Scarce adventive
