Leaf-mine: Leaf-mines on birch, forming a blotch mine. Vacated mines cannot be identified. Mine starting at the leaf edge, accumulation of frass showing where the mine has started. Characteristic dark head and prothorax of early larvae. This feature is lost as the larvae matures.
Adult moths very similar to E. sangii. Genitalia dissection is required to separate E. sangii, E. semipurpurella, Paracrania chrysolepidella, E. unimaculella and E. cicatricella. (Note: Females cannot be determined via genitalia)
