Large Rose Shoot Moth

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1178 / 49.295
=Summer Rose Bell
=Epiblema roborana

Norfolk status
Widespread and fairly common in Norfolk.

Notocelia roborana is usually larger (wingspan 16-22mm) than similar N. trimaculana (wingspan 15-17mm) and roughly the same size as N. rosaecolana.

N. roborana has a smaller dark basal patch and the pale area is less marked than in the other species.

Notocelia roborana and N. trimaculana can be provisionally separated by size. Genital dissection may be required for confident distinction between the two if size is intermediate.

Fairly common and well distributed through the British Isles in hedgerows, chalk downs and open woodland, especially where dog rose occurs, coastal cliffs and sandhills where it is sometimes plentiful on burnet rose.

Larvae feed on Wild Rose and Cultivated Rose.

Recorded in 44 (59%) of 74 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1874.
Last Recorded in 2024.
