Eriocrania salopiella
Yellow-headed Spring Jewel

(Stainton, 1854)10 / 2.005
=Small Birch Purple

Norfolk status
Very similar to other species of Eriocrania in adult stage, the beige/ochre head and thorax help identification.

Usually easier to record in the larval stage once feeding signs and larvae are familiarised.

Leaf-mine: Larvae occur in May and early June. The species is the latest of the birch-feeders with the exception of Eriocrania sparrmannella. Mines starting in the interior of the leaf, accumulation of frass showing where the mine has started.

Older records from Felthorpe in 1980, Narborough in 2003 and Dersingham Bog in 2010. Several leaf-mine records in recent years.

Verification Grade Comment: Mine: Easier if larva present

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.

Recorded in 19 (26%) of 74 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1980.
Last Recorded in 2024.
