Rare migrant and possible scarce resident.

Variable species with two main forms and several intermediates all showing a characteristic irregular cross-line.

First recorded at Bloxworth, Dorset, in September 1884, remaining a very scarce migrant until 1990, when a small population was discovered at Torbay, Devon.
Recent records in Suffolk could indicate residency in the county.

Overwinters as an adult where it hibernates in unheated outbuildings etc, flying again in May - June.

First Norfolk record in November 2023 when an adult moth was found in an underground site during a Bat survey in West Norfolk. (Ash Murray, 20/11/23)
