Status Unmistakable large moth. Patterned forewings provide excellent camouflage, and the red-and-black striped hindwings only show in flight. The adults often rest on walls, fences and tree trunks, especially poplars and willows, and the large moths are often disturbed by day. Woodland, scrub, carr, riverbanks and gardens. Comes to light, more frequently to sugar.
