Norfolk status
Uncertain/Rare migrant.
Formerly confined to large Oak woodland in the New Forest, increasing its range in SE England in recent years.

Similar to Dark Crimson Underwing. DCU is usually larger and brown in general colouration, LCU is smaller and greyer. The hindwing upperside is the most reliable feature to separate. DCU black cross-bar deeply waved. LCU black cross-bar much straighter with shallow waves. See field guides for more info.

First modern-day records at Hunstanton in 2022 (R. Sturgess, 05/08/22) and at Heacham in 2023 (J. Mann, 21/07/23) Both taken in areas of old Oak trees.
Specimen also taken at Cley NNR in 2023 (D. Norgate et. al.,01/08/23)

Documented record from Norwich in 1993 is not valid. Specimen was dead, and is thought travelled to Norwich from the New Forest in someone's car!
