Thouless & Moore Collections - Norwich Castle Museum

One of the City's most famous landmarks, Norwich Castle was built by the Normans as a Royal Palace 900 years ago. Used as a prison from the 14th century, the Castle became a museum in 1894. Now the County's principal museum, the Castle is packed with treasures to inspire and intrigue visitors of all ages. Its outstanding collections of fine art, archaeology and natural history are of national importance.

Amongst numerous categories and collections are the pre-eminent Fountaine-Neimy collection of butterflies and the W.G.Whittingham collection. There are a further 26 large collections covering all orders, including 56,000 British and 30,000 foreign Lepidoptera.

Henry James Thouless
Born in Norwich 1864. An ardent student of entomology, he collected butterflies and moths and became an acknowledged authority on beetles. President of the Norwich & Norfolk Naturalists Society in 1915, and at the time of his death in 1933 was the Treasurer of this society. He lived in College Rd, Norwich and also owned a bungalow on the bank of the River Bure near Wroxam.

John Lee Moore
Born in south-east London in 1877 and educated at St. John's in Cambridge 1896-9. He moved to Yarmouth in 1900 as acting manager of the lawyers Burton, Moore & Cranshaw. For thirty six years he lived at 120 Lowestoft road in Gorleston. He was an excellent Botanist and peculiarly keen Lepidopterist. He died in 1939, his collections remain intact at the Castle Museum.
