Grassland, heathland, meadows.
Day-flying moth, flying only in sunshine.
Mainly in the Brecks and north to the coast.
English name refers to the forewing markings, which appear to show an old lady or witch's head, refering to 'Old Mother Shipton', the 16th century Yorkshire witch!
