Case-bearing Clothes Moth

=Carpet Moth

Norfolk status
Common.
One of the clothes moths, also known as the Carpet Moth.

Local in houses, bird nests, barns, warehouses and granaries throughout the British Isles.

The adults are generally on the wing between June and October, but may appear outside this period since they often live inside buildings.

The larvae are incredibly destructive, they can munch their way through wool carpets at remarkable speed and render them bald.
This case-bearing moth is so named due to the silken case the larvae weaves to protect itself while it is eating your carpet. It can turn around inside to eat at both ends. When it is large enough this case is sealed while the grub pupates and becomes an adult moth.

Recorded in 44 (59%) of 74 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1985.
Last Recorded in 2024.
