Emmelina monodactyla
Common Plume

(Linnaeus, 1758)1524 / 45.044

Norfolk status
Widespread and common.
Wings vary from off-white to light brown, usually dusted with darker scales. Only the outer third of each wing is split into plumes, but wings so tightly rolled at rest that they look solid. A dark central spot on the forewing usually visible.

Note: The very similar Emmelina argoteles (Meyrick) was discovered at Wicken Fen, Cambridgeshire in 2005 (Higgott, 2006) being new to Britain. Is is suggested this species is restricted to wetland habitats and associated with Hedge Bindweed. This species could occur in the Broads? Examination of the genitalia is critical for separation.

Recorded in 65 (88%) of 74 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1873.
Last Recorded in 2024.
