Widespread.
A very variable species.

Well-marked specimens are characterized by the well-defined basal patch.
Habitats where elm occurs in lowland areas. The moth is often to be found resting openly, sometimes in large numbers.

Often recorded as larval feeding signs. The larvae feed in unopened buds of Elm in their first instar, resulting in a characteristic arc of holes between the veins as the leaves open and expand later in the year.
