Norfolk status
Widespread.
Gardens, hedgerows, woodland, fens and orchards.
Extremely variable species with several forms.

The nominate form has a forewing demarcated centrally, with a white basal half showing a large dark patch on the dorsum and a ferruginous/black distal half.

f. asperana
As above but with no dark patch on the dorsum.

f. cirrana
Forewing ground colour yellow/brown.

f. brunneana
forewing colour brown rather than black.

f. argentana
White with obsolescent markings except for a dark costal blotch to the forewing.

f. albana
All white.

f. caeruleaoatrana
Melanic all dark.
