(Poda, 1761) 2067 / 72.030

Norfolk status
Scarce, probable new resident and suspected rare immigrant.

Until recently restricted in distribution to the Channel Islands and parts of the south coast. Found in south Devon with colonies recently appearing in Dorset and the Isle of Wight. There is also a thriving population in parts of London, Hertfordshire and several records from Bedfordshire. With recent records from neighbouring counties Cambs and Suffolk (larval records in Suffolk indicate colonization), the species is likely to spread in to Norfolk.

Underwings can be either bold red/orange with black spots or yellow with black spots, f.lutescens

First recorded in Norfolk when a specimen was photographed in a garden at Castle Acre, in west Norfolk, on 17th August 2013 (Nick Ford). A second adult was found in a kitchen in Norwich on 6th July 2017. (Hendrik Witziers)
Recent records from near Thwaite Common in 2018, Cley in 2019 (M. Harcup) and two at West Walton in 2019 (L. Simkins) with several recorded in subsequent years.
